The name makes it sound like some quirky hostel, but this place is actually a proper 4-star spot that feels more like staying at a design-savvy friend’s place than a hotel. It’s tucked away on Dubrovačka street in Zemun – and honestly, if you don’t know Belgrade well, Zemun might not ring a bell, but it’s this charming old town that’s technically part of Belgrade but feels completely separate. Think cobblestone streets, riverside cafes, and way less tourist chaos than the main city center.

The location is sort of perfect if you want to experience Belgrade like a local rather than just hitting the fortress and calling it a day. You’re literally a five-minute walk from the Danube waterfront, where locals go for evening strolls and weekend coffee sessions. The Gardoš Tower is practically around the corner – not the most famous landmark, but climb up there at sunset and you’ll get these incredible views over the river without fighting crowds. What I really appreciated was how quiet Dubrovačka street gets at night. I mean, you’re still close enough to hear some life from the main pedestrian zone, but it’s not like you’re trying to sleep above a nightclub. The apartment itself has this clean, minimalist thing going on – lots of white and blue (hence the name, I guess), but it doesn’t feel sterile. Someone clearly thought about the details, from the lighting to the way the kitchen is actually functional if you want to grab groceries from the market near Zemun’s main square.

Parking was surprisingly straightforward, which anyone who’s driven in Belgrade will tell you is basically a miracle. The check-in process was smooth – none of that awkward waiting around in a tiny lobby situation since it’s more of a boutique setup. I stayed there in early fall when the weather was still warm enough to keep the windows open, and honestly, the cross-breeze situation was perfect. You get these little sounds from the neighborhood – kids playing, people chatting on their way to the riverfront, church bells from one of Zemun’s old Orthodox churches – but it’s the kind of ambient noise that makes you feel like you’re actually somewhere, not sealed off in a hotel bubble. The 9.6 rating makes total sense once you’re there; it’s not trying to be flashy or overly fancy, but everything just… works. The Wi-Fi is solid (crucial if you’re working remotely), the shower pressure is actually decent, and the bed situation is comfortable without being ridiculously plush. If you’re the type who wants to be right in the thick of Belgrade’s nightlife, you might find Zemun a bit removed – though honestly, a quick taxi or bus ride gets you downtown in 15 minutes. But if you want to see a side of the city that feels more authentic and less performative, Blue Box gets it right.
