You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Apartment Lea Lux on Nemanjina Street – I mean, it’s tucked into this quiet residential stretch in Zemun, and from the outside it just looks like another Belgrade apartment building. But honestly, the moment you step inside, it’s like someone took a regular Serbian flat and gave it the full luxury treatment without losing any of the local character.

The thing about staying in Zemun is that you’re actually getting the best of both worlds here. You’re technically still in Belgrade, but it feels completely different – more relaxed, less traffic noise, and you can walk down to the Danube waterfront in about ten minutes. The apartment itself is what really surprised me though. Everything’s been done up properly – I’m talking marble bathrooms, a kitchen that’s actually equipped for cooking (not just instant coffee), and these huge windows that let in tons of light. The beds are legitimately comfortable too, which isn’t always a given in this part of Europe, if I’m being honest. What I really appreciated was the attention to small details – decent water pressure in the shower, blackout curtains that actually work, and WiFi that doesn’t cut out every five minutes.

Here’s the thing about the location that most people don’t realize until they’re here: Zemun has this completely different vibe from central Belgrade. You wake up to church bells instead of car horns, and there’s this lovely pedestrian zone just a few streets over where locals actually hang out – not just tourists taking selfies. If you want to head into the main city, you’re looking at maybe 15-20 minutes by car or tram, but honestly, some of the best restaurants in Belgrade are right here in Zemun anyway. The staff – well, I hesitate to call them staff because it feels more like staying with friends who happen to be really good at hospitality – they’ll point you toward places like Saran or Zlatna Ribica if you want proper Serbian fish, or they know which kafanas actually serve decent food versus just atmosphere. Parking was surprisingly easy too, which anyone who’s driven in Belgrade will tell you is basically a miracle. The only minor thing I’d mention is that if you’re someone who needs to be walking distance from Knez Mihailova or the fortress, this might feel a bit removed – but that’s also exactly why it’s so peaceful and why you’ll sleep better here than you would in the tourist center.
