You know what caught me off guard about Apartment Hana Lux? The fact that it’s tucked away on Nemanjina Street in Zemun but feels like you’ve stumbled into some boutique hideaway that costs twice as much. I mean, Zemun itself is this charming old town that most tourists skip – they’re too busy rushing around Belgrade proper – but honestly, that’s their loss.

The apartment itself is one of those places where someone clearly sweated the details. The floors have this satisfying weight when you walk on them (none of that hollow laminate nonsense), and the kitchen actually has proper counter space, which is rarer than you’d think in European rentals. What really sold me though was stepping out onto the little balcony in the morning – you can hear the Danube if you listen carefully, and there’s this bakery smell that drifts up from the street level around 7 AM. The old ladies do their shopping early here, and you’ll see them with their wheeled carts heading to the market on Glavna Street, which is maybe a three-minute walk away.

Parking was surprisingly painless (I’d heard horror stories about Belgrade), and the check-in was handled by this woman who actually knew the neighborhood – she pointed out which kafana serves the best ćevapi and warned me that the church bells ring at 6 AM sharp. The rating of 9.1 makes total sense once you realize this isn’t just about thread count and marble bathrooms, though the bathroom is quite nice. It’s about staying somewhere that feels connected to the actual rhythm of the place. Zemun has this different energy from central Belgrade – quieter, more lived-in, with these cobblestone streets that lead down to the Danube waterfront. You can walk to Gardoš Tower in about ten minutes if you don’t mind a bit of uphill, and the view from there… well, it’s the kind of thing that makes you understand why people fight over this part of the world. The apartment becomes your little base camp for exploring not just the tourist spots but the everyday Belgrade that most visitors never see – the morning coffee culture, the evening promenades, the way locals actually live when they’re not performing for cameras.
