The Experience

Barbarosa

You know what struck me first about Barbarosa?

You know what struck me first about Barbarosa? It’s tucked away on this quiet street in Stari Grad where you can actually hear yourself think – which honestly is saying something in Belgrade. The address might look intimidating with all those Serbian characters, but Marshal Birjuzov street is actually this lovely tree-lined stretch that feels worlds away from the tourist chaos, yet you’re still walking distance from everything that matters.

I mean, the 4-star rating isn’t just hotel marketing fluff here – they’ve genuinely thought about the details. The rooms have this understated elegance that doesn’t try too hard, if that makes sense. Thick curtains that actually block out light (crucial if you’re planning late nights in Belgrade’s legendary nightlife scene), and the beds are properly comfortable, not those rock-hard European mattresses you sometimes get stuck with. What really impressed me was how quiet it stays even on weekends – you’d think being in the old town would mean constant noise, but the building’s solid and the street doesn’t get the party traffic that some areas do.

The staff actually know their neighborhood, which is rarer than you’d think. When I asked about getting to Skadarlija, the guy at reception didn’t just point me toward Google Maps – he told me about the shortcut through the small park and mentioned which kafanas were worth the tourist prices versus where locals actually eat. That 8.8 rating makes sense when you experience that kind of genuine helpfulness. Parking was surprisingly manageable too (they’ve got a small lot, but there’s street parking that’s not completely impossible), and check-in was refreshingly straightforward – no upselling, no complicated key card systems that never work.

What I loved most was how it feels like a proper Belgrade experience rather than some generic international hotel. The breakfast area overlooks this charming courtyard, and you’ll often see older Serbian gentlemen playing chess in the morning light. The whole vibe is relaxed but attentive – they keep things clean and well-maintained without being stuffy about it. If you’re planning to explore the fortress or wander through the bohemian quarter, you’re positioned perfectly here. Plus, and this is key for Belgrade, you can walk to decent restaurants and bars without needing to navigate the sometimes chaotic taxi situation late at night.

The location of the house was good, and the host was very helpful in finding a parking spot for us. The house also had a washing machine and dishwasher- which was convenient

What could be improved: Including the front door and the bathroom door had issues :( to be honest, it was not one of the cleaneat places I’ve stayed in. Additionally there is no shower cabin so water splashes everywhere. It also felt strange to me that the host wanted the full payment in the check in time.

This is a beautiful apartment in the very city centre, yet the area is super quiet. You'll find many bakeries, supermarkets, cafes, and restaurants, just a street or so away from the apartment. Public transport is also conveniently located nearby. Jelena is an amazing host, and she went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable. Thank you so much 💓

What could be improved: Everything was great

What an amazing place in the center of Belgrade. The host was very friendly, she waited for us upon arrival to give us keys and explain the apartment. It is so spacious, everything is new. The beds were really comfortable, lot of space to put our clothes and bags, very comfortable couch and even a working space that I used for my work calls. The kitchen was fully equipped even with oil, salt and other small stuff to make cooking easier. The host was also very attentive and when a washing machine broke, she immediately came to help us. The location of the apartment was perfect, everything walking distance and even parking was easy (either a parking house down the street or a free parking in a street 3 minutes walk). We would come back next time!

Let's start with the positive points:
1. Excellent location - city center, with windows overlooking a quiet courtyard, multi-level parking within a 3-minute walk. Bakeries, cafes and shops are also close.
2. A very friendly hostess who resolved all issues. Many thanks to her.
3. The apartment is very clean - probably one of the cleanest apartments I've ever rented. Like at home.
4. The apartment has everything - dishes, tea/coffee, full sets of linen and towels, soap and shampoo, etc.

What could be improved: Among the unpleasant moments:
1. There is very good audibility in the house, we were on a holiday and the neighbors upstairs were noisy until 5 am, it was difficult to sleep. On the second night there were no such problems.
2. I advise you to replace the front door - both for security and for sound insulation
3. The water in the bathroom takes a long time to drain (but the fact that a Serbian apartment has a bathtub is a definite plus)
4. Wi-Fi is a little slow, but these are minor things.
I hope that the owner will not be offended by these facts and they will only help make her apartment better.
