Captain’s Crib

So I stumbled across Captain's Crib during one of those late-night booking sessions where you're desperately searching for something decent in Belgrade's old town, and honestly?

So I stumbled across Captain’s Crib during one of those late-night booking sessions where you’re desperately searching for something decent in Belgrade’s old town, and honestly? Best accidental find ever. The name threw me off at first – I mean, Captain’s Crib sounds like either a nautical-themed restaurant or someone’s weekend boat – but this little 4-star gem sits right on Kapetan-Mišina street, and suddenly the maritime connection makes perfect sense.

The location is what really gets me excited about this place. You’re literally in the heart of Stari Grad, which means you can stumble out the front door and be at Skadarlija (Belgrade’s bohemian quarter) in about three minutes if you walk fast, five if you’re taking your time and actually looking at the beautiful old architecture. I actually timed it because, you know, these things matter when you’re trying to squeeze in that last rakija before heading back. The street itself is pretty quiet – it’s residential enough that you won’t have drunk tourists shouting under your window at 2 AM, but central enough that everything worth seeing is within walking distance. Parking can be a bit tricky around here (welcome to European old towns), but the hotel staff actually knows the neighborhood well enough to point you toward spots that won’t get you towed.

What struck me most was how the place feels authentically Belgrade without trying too hard. The building has that solid, understated elegance you find in this part of the city – nothing flashy, just well-maintained and comfortable in its own skin. The rooms are properly sized (not those shoebox affairs you sometimes get in boutique places), and you can tell someone actually thought about what travelers need. The 8.4 rating makes complete sense when you stay here – it’s not perfect, but it gets the important stuff right. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward, none of that overly formal hotel theater, just friendly people who seem genuinely happy to help you figure out the city. I remember asking about where to get proper ćevapi at odd hours, and instead of the usual tourist trap recommendations, they pointed me toward this tiny place locals actually use. That kind of local knowledge is worth its weight in gold, honestly. The whole experience just felt… authentic, I guess? Like staying at a well-run place that happens to be in one of Europe’s most interesting cities, rather than some generic hotel that could be anywhere.

The location of the flat really great, all of the main attractions are really close and easy to reach.

What could be improved: Not all of the appliances in the kitchen are suitable for using. The kitchen hood and the battery don’t have any socket to plug them in, or the cord in just too short for that. And the chandelier in the bedroom in hanging really low and needs to be fixed.

The host was super nice. She picked us up at the airport (our flight was supposed to arrive at 1 am, but was delayed and only arrived at 3am!) and facilitated our late check-in.

The room was nice and clean and we had a cat waiting for us outside of the kitchen window. She was there every day and she was so cute with her kittens 😸 ❤
The owner was nice and helpful and we communicate very well through messages. The Wi-Fi was fast, the bed comfy, the kitchen and bathroom ok. The check-in was easy.

What could be improved: The smell of the cigarettes inside the apartment is very unpleasant, but for 2 days it wasn't a big problem especially because it was really clean, otherwise.
