You know what’s funny about Belgrade? Everyone talks about staying in the old town or along the Danube, but honestly, some of the best finds are tucked away in neighborhoods like Zvezdara where locals actually live. That’s exactly what I discovered with Belrado Apartments on Милоша Матијевића street – and trust me, you’ll want to save that address because most taxi drivers know the area well.

The thing that struck me first wasn’t the apartment itself (though it’s genuinely lovely), but how quiet this little street is. I mean, you’re still in Belgrade, so there’s life happening around you, but it’s more like… the sound of neighbors coming home from work, kids playing in courtyards, that sort of authentic city rhythm rather than tourist chaos. The building has that solid, no-nonsense Serbian architecture – probably from the 80s or 90s – but the apartments inside have been completely updated. My place had these huge windows that let in amazing morning light, and the kitchen was actually functional, not just for show like in some places. There’s proper counter space, a full-size fridge, and – this matters more than you’d think – really good water pressure in the shower.

What I loved most was how easy it became to live like a local for a few days. There’s this little pekara (bakery) about two blocks down where I’d grab fresh burek every morning, and the elderly woman behind the counter started recognizing me by day three. The neighborhood has that perfect mix of residential calm and urban convenience – you’ve got a decent grocery store within walking distance, plus you’re actually closer to some of Belgrade’s newer districts than you’d be from the tourist center. Getting to Kalemegdan or Skadarlija takes maybe 15-20 minutes by tram or bus, and the connections are straightforward once you figure out the system. Parking isn’t a nightmare here either, which anyone who’s driven in Belgrade will appreciate. The hosts were genuinely helpful too – not in that overly enthusiastic way that makes you suspicious, but like normal people who want you to enjoy their city. They left me a hand-drawn map with their favorite spots marked, including this amazing little kafana that I never would have found otherwise. The whole experience just felt… real, I guess? Like staying in someone’s actual neighborhood rather than a sanitized tourist bubble.
