Apartment Black Diamond – Vracar, Belgrade

I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to the Black Diamond on Katanićeva, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The street’s pretty quiet for Belgrade, which is actually a good thing because you’re right in the heart of Vračar but you can actually get some sleep. The building itself has that solid, old Belgrade charm – you know, the kind where the elevator makes interesting sounds but everything’s been renovated inside so it works perfectly.

What really got me was how they’ve done the apartments. I mean, you walk in and it’s clear someone actually thought about how people live, not just how to cram in the most beds. The kitchen has real counter space (try finding that in most Belgrade rentals), and honestly, the black and white design theme could’ve been stark and cold, but they’ve pulled it off in a way that feels sophisticated without being pretentious. The windows are massive too – during the day you get this gorgeous natural light that makes the whole place feel bigger than it is. At night, well, you’re close enough to the action that you can hear the city humming, but far enough that it’s not keeping you awake.

Here’s what I really love about the location though – you’re maybe a ten-minute walk to Slavija Square, which means you can get anywhere in the city without much fuss. But more importantly, you’re in proper Belgrade residential territory. There’s this little bakery two blocks down where locals actually go for their morning bread, and the coffee shop on the corner serves espresso that’ll wake you up properly. You won’t find tour groups wandering around taking photos of every doorway, but you will find actual Serbian families walking their dogs and old men playing chess in the small park nearby. The whole Vračar district has this lived-in feeling that’s hard to find in most tourist areas – it’s where people actually have their apartments and raise their kids, so there’s a rhythm to the neighborhood that feels authentic. Parking can be a bit tricky during the day (like everywhere in Belgrade), but honestly, once you’re settled in, you’ll probably want to walk most places anyway. The trams run regularly, and if you’re feeling adventurous, it’s totally walkable to places like Kalemegdan or the pedestrian zone. I stayed here in early spring when the weather was still cool, and there’s something really nice about coming back to a warm, well-designed space after wandering around the city all day.
