St. Sava Temple/Slavija square

Honestly, when I first saw the address on Podgorička Street, I wasn’t sure what to expect – it’s one of those quiet residential streets in Vračar that you’d walk right past if you weren’t looking for it. But you know what? That turned out to be exactly what made this place special. You’re literally a three-minute walk from the massive St. Sava Temple (I mean, you can see it from some of the windows), yet you’re tucked away from all the tourist chaos that usually comes with being that close to Belgrade’s most famous landmark.

The location is actually brilliant once you get your bearings. Slavija Square is right there – and I know, I know, Slavija can be a bit of a traffic nightmare, but hear me out. You’ve got the perfect setup for exploring the city without feeling like you’re staying in the middle of a construction zone. The temple area gets packed during the day with tour groups and wedding parties (especially on weekends – the sound of church bells becomes your natural alarm clock), but by evening it settles into this lovely, almost village-like quiet. I was surprised how peaceful it felt at night, considering you’re still very much in the city center. The neighborhood has that authentic Belgrade residential vibe – you’ll see locals walking their dogs, old men playing chess in the small parks, and there’s this fantastic little bakery about two blocks down that opens ridiculously early and makes the entire street smell like fresh bread.

What really impressed me was how the staff seemed to actually know the area beyond just the obvious tourist spots. When I asked about getting to Kalemegdan, they didn’t just point me toward the main road – they suggested this lovely walking route through the backstreets that takes you past some beautiful old houses and a couple of those tiny neighborhood kafanas that you’d never find on your own. The whole experience felt less like staying at a hotel and more like crashing at a local friend’s place who happens to have their act together. With a 9.8 rating, I was expecting something good, but the attention to small details really stood out – they actually remembered my coffee preference after the second day, and when I mentioned I was interested in Serbian history, someone left a couple of local guidebooks (in English) outside my room. The rooms themselves are well-soundproofed, which matters more than you’d think when you’re this close to both a major square and a busy temple. Parking can be a bit tricky in this neighborhood – it’s all street parking and locals know all the good spots – but they’ll actually help you figure it out rather than just shrugging and saying “good luck.”
