Sofie – free parking place in the garage

So I stumbled across Sofie while hunting for a place to stay in Belgrade’s old town, and honestly? Best accidental discovery I’ve made in ages. The thing that caught my eye initially was “free parking in the garage” right there in the name – I mean, anyone who’s tried to park in Stari Grad knows that’s basically like finding a unicorn. But it’s actually legit, and after circling those narrow cobblestone streets for what felt like hours on previous trips, having a guaranteed spot was already worth its weight in gold.

The location on Kolarčeva is pretty perfect if you ask me. You’re literally a two-minute walk from Knez Mihailova – that’s the main pedestrian strip where everyone ends up eventually – but far enough away that you’re not dealing with the weekend crowds stumbling past your window at 2 AM. I could hear the occasional tram rumbling by, which actually became kind of soothing after the first night. The building itself has that restored Belgrade charm – you know, the kind where they’ve kept the beautiful old bones but made sure everything actually works properly. Walking up to check in, I noticed they’d managed to squeeze modern conveniences into what’s clearly a heritage building without making it feel like a corporate hotel chain landed in the middle of historic Serbia.

What really impressed me was how the staff seemed to actually know the neighborhood inside and out. When I asked about dinner recommendations, the guy at reception didn’t just hand me a tourist brochure – he started drawing a little map on hotel stationary, pointing out this tiny kafana tucked away on a side street that I never would have found otherwise. The rooms themselves are well thought out too, with proper blackout curtains (crucial if you’re planning to sleep past sunrise) and surprisingly good water pressure in the shower. I mean, it’s a 4-star place so you’d hope for decent amenities, but sometimes hotels in historic buildings compromise on the practical stuff. Not here though. The whole experience felt like staying at a friend’s really nice apartment, if your friend happened to have professional housekeeping and 24-hour reception. That 9.3 rating makes total sense once you’ve been there – it’s one of those places where all the little details just work together smoothly, and you end up extending your stay because leaving feels unnecessarily complicated.
