Mercure Belgrade Excelsior

You know what struck me first about the Mercure Belgrade Excelsior? It’s got this sort of understated elegance that doesn’t try too hard – which honestly feels perfect for Belgrade. The building sits right on Kneza Miloša, and I mean right in the heart of things without being chaotic about it. You’re basically a five-minute walk from Terazije Square, but the street itself has this quieter, more residential vibe that locals actually live on.

The lobby has that classic European hotel feel – marble floors that echo just enough to remind you you’re somewhere special, but not so much that you feel like you’re disturbing everyone when you drag your suitcase across. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward (no upselling, thank god), and the staff actually seemed to know the neighborhood when I asked about dinner spots. They pointed me toward this little kafana tucked away on a side street that I never would’ve found otherwise. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star – nothing revolutionary, but everything works properly and the beds are actually comfortable. I appreciated that the AC didn’t sound like a freight train, which seems rare in older European hotels. The bathrooms are recently updated, good water pressure, and honestly the little details like decent lighting around the mirror make a difference when you’re getting ready for dinner.

What really sold me on this place though is the location – you’re in Vračar, which feels like the real Belgrade. Step outside and you’ve got cafes where people actually sit for hours (not just tourists grabbing quick coffees), plus you’re walking distance to both the bohemian Skadarlija district and the fortress area. The Vukov Spomenik metro station is maybe ten minutes away, though honestly Belgrade is walkable enough that I barely used public transport. Parking can be tricky on the street – typical for this part of the city – but the hotel can arrange something if you’re driving. I’d definitely stay here again, especially since the 8.4 rating feels about right – it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in town, but it gets the fundamentals right and puts you exactly where you want to be to actually experience Belgrade rather than just pass through it.
