Hotel Centar No.1

You know what struck me first about Hotel Centar No.1?

You know what struck me first about Hotel Centar No.1? The name is almost comically straightforward – like they just decided to own being the main hotel on one of Belgrade’s most important streets. And honestly, they kind of are. Walking up Kolarčeva, you can’t miss it, sitting right there where the old city’s energy feels most concentrated. I mean, you’re literally a two-minute walk from Knez Mihailova pedestrian zone, but here’s the thing most people don’t realize – you’re positioned perfectly to duck into those little side streets where actual Belgraders hang out. There’s this tiny kafana called Tri Šešira just around the corner that serves the kind of ćevapi that’ll ruin you for anywhere else.

The hotel itself has that solid, unpretentious vibe that I actually prefer over flashy places. It’s a proper 4-star without trying too hard – clean lines, comfortable beds that don’t squeak when you move (you’d be surprised how rare that is), and bathrooms with decent water pressure. The staff genuinely seems to know the city, not just the tourist version of it. When I asked about getting to Ada Ciganlija for some swimming, the guy at reception didn’t just point me toward a taxi – he explained the bus route and mentioned which beach sections get crowded versus where locals actually go. The rooms facing Kolarčeva can get a bit noisy during weekend evenings since it’s a main thoroughfare, but that’s Belgrade for you. If you’re someone who needs absolute quiet, ask for a back room. Though honestly, the street sounds sort of become part of the charm after a night or two – trams clanking by, people heading to dinner way later than anywhere else in Europe.

What really sells me on this place is the location intelligence, if that makes sense. You’re close enough to everything that matters – Kalemegdan Fortress is maybe a 10-minute walk through cobblestone streets that feel like stepping back in time – but you’re not stuck in the middle of tourist chaos. Plus, and this might sound weird, but the neighborhood has actual grocery stores and pharmacies, which means you can live like a person instead of just existing in hotel-restaurant-attraction bubble. The breakfast is solid without being elaborate, though I’d skip it and walk five minutes to get burek from one of the local bakeries. Trust me on this one. For the 8.8 rating it holds, Hotel Centar No.1 delivers exactly what it promises – a comfortable, well-located base for exploring Belgrade without any pretension or nasty surprises.

Location is at the foot of the square. 15 min walk to the fortress but you will walking along the pedestrian street. so lots of cafe and restaurants to eat. Tamara was the most helpful person I encountered in Belgrade and a model what a reception host should be. The single room I liked and I can tell it's a bit modern/new and all in very good condition. The carpet in room and hallway is on a thin side but again all is very good. I did reserve the sauna (opens 9am-9pm). Note to all, bring your shorts as this is mixed gender sauna. There are also showers and small locker room to change.

Location was excellent. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable.

What could be improved: It would be good if there was a lobby or a coffee shop in front of the hotel.
