City Break Apartments – City Zen

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first walked up to City Break Apartments on Zmaja od Nocaja – the street name alone had me practicing pronunciation for ten minutes. But you know what? This place completely surprised me. It’s tucked right in the heart of Stari Grad, which means you’re literally sleeping in Belgrade’s old soul, and I mean that in the best possible way. The building itself has that solid European feel, not flashy or trying too hard, just well-maintained and unpretentious.

What really got me was how quiet it actually is inside, despite being surrounded by all the action. I mean, step outside and you’re a five-minute walk from Skadarlija – that cobblestone bohemian quarter everyone raves about – but somehow the apartments feel like a proper retreat. The rooms are spacious (and I’m talking properly spacious, not hotel-brochure spacious), with kitchenettes that you’ll actually use because there’s a fantastic little market just around the corner where locals shop. I spent way too much time there buying cheese and trying to communicate with hand gestures. The Wi-Fi works without any of that lobby-only nonsense, which honestly saved my sanity during a few work calls.

Here’s the thing though – and this is why I’d come back – the location just makes sense once you’re there. You can walk to the fortress in about fifteen minutes if you don’t mind a bit of uphill action, the main pedestrian zone is practically next door, and there’s this little kafana called “?” (literally just a question mark) that serves the most incredible ćevapi about two blocks away. The staff actually knows the neighborhood, not just the tourist highlights, so when I asked about where locals go for morning coffee, I got real recommendations. Check-in was smooth, parking can be a bit of an adventure if you’re driving (welcome to old European city centers), but there are spots if you’re patient. The 8.3 rating feels about right – it’s not going to blow your mind with luxury, but it delivers exactly what you want from a Belgrade base: comfort, character, and that perfect balance of being in the thick of things while still being able to get a decent night’s sleep.
