Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Hotel Champion on Rajka Mitića Street – I mean, it’s tucked away in this quieter part of Savski Venac, sort of off the main tourist drag. But you know what? Sometimes the best finds are the ones that don’t scream for attention.

The building itself has this understated elegance that feels authentically Belgrade – not trying too hard to be boutique-y or flashy, just solid and well-thought-out. Walking into the lobby, there’s this immediate sense that someone actually cares about the details here. The staff genuinely seemed happy to see guests (which, let’s be real, isn’t always a given), and check-in was refreshingly smooth. I actually overheard them switching between Serbian, English, and what sounded like German with different guests – pretty impressive for a mid-sized place. The rooms are where Champion really shines though. Everything feels… I don’t know, intentional? Like the lighting is warm enough that you don’t look half-dead in the bathroom mirror, and the beds are properly firm without being concrete slabs. There’s decent soundproofing too, which matters because Belgrade can get lively at night, though this particular stretch of the street stays pretty calm anyway.

What really sold me on this place was the breakfast situation – and I’m usually pretty skeptical about hotel breakfasts. They’ve got this setup that’s clearly designed by someone who understands that travelers want real food, not just pastries and mystery meat. Fresh local cheeses, proper bread, decent coffee (actually decent, not hotel lobby decent). The dining area overlooks a small courtyard that catches morning light beautifully – one of those little moments that makes you slow down and appreciate where you are. Parking was surprisingly hassle-free too, which anyone who’s driven in Belgrade will tell you is no small thing. The location itself is pretty clever actually – you’re close enough to walk to the main sights along the Sava riverfront, but far enough from the chaos of Kneza Mihaila that you can actually get some sleep. There’s a good bakery about two blocks down that locals hit up for morning coffee, and you’re maybe a fifteen-minute walk to some of the better restaurants in the area. I mean, you could easily spend way more money on hotels closer to the fortress or the old town and end up with a worse experience. The 9.6 rating honestly makes sense once you’re there – it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in the city, but everything they do, they do well. Champion feels like the kind of place where you’d actually want to hang out in your room for a bit, maybe catch up on emails or just decompress, instead of treating it like somewhere you just crash between sightseeing marathons.
