You know what struck me first about Apartments Skadarlija? The address alone tells you everything – Simina Street puts you right in the thick of Belgrade’s bohemian quarter, and I mean literally a two-minute walk from the cobblestones and kafana music that Skadarlija is famous for. It’s one of those places where you can actually hear the tamburica drifting from the restaurants below on summer evenings, but honestly, it never gets overwhelming. The building itself has that solid Serbian architecture thing going on – thick walls that keep the sound down when you want to sleep.

The apartments are properly spacious, which is refreshing after dealing with those shoebox hotel rooms you get in Western Europe. I’m talking actual kitchens where you can cook a real meal, not just a mini-fridge and a prayer. The furnishings feel more like someone’s well-maintained city apartment than hotel generic – there’s character here, even if it’s not trying to be Instagram-perfect. What I really appreciated was how they handle the practical stuff well. Check-in was straightforward (they actually answer their phones), and parking… well, it’s Belgrade, so street parking is what it is, but they know the neighborhood and can point you toward the easier spots. The 4-star rating feels about right – it’s comfortable and clean without being fancy for fancy’s sake.

Here’s the thing about staying in Skadarlija that guidebooks don’t really capture – you’re in this weird perfect bubble where you can walk to everything that matters in Stari Grad, but you’re also tucked away from the main tourist chaos. Knez Mihailova pedestrian zone is maybe five minutes on foot, Republic Square is right there, and if you want to get to Kalemegdan Fortress, it’s an easy stroll through the old streets. But honestly, some nights you won’t want to go anywhere else because the neighborhood itself is the entertainment. The local bakeries open early (there’s a good one just around the corner), and you’ll figure out pretty quickly which kafanas are for tourists and which ones the locals actually use. The whole area gets this lovely evening energy that’s hard to find in more modern parts of the city – people sitting outside, talking, that whole Balkan social scene happening naturally around you. With an 8.8 rating, you’re getting something that clearly works for most people, and I can see why. It’s Belgrade as it should be experienced, not sanitized for visitors but not rough around the edges either.
