Old soul of Skadarlija

You know what struck me first about Old Soul of Skadarlija? The name isn’t just some marketing gimmick – this place actually gets what Skadarska Street is all about. I mean, you’re literally staying on Belgrade’s bohemian strip, where the cobblestones have probably absorbed more rakija and passionate conversations than anywhere else in the city. The hotel sits right at number 19, which puts you close enough to the famous kafanas to hear the occasional accordion drift through your window (honestly, it’s charming rather than annoying), but far enough that you’re not dealing with the weekend chaos all night long.

The building itself has this wonderful old-world thing going on – you can tell they put real thought into keeping the character intact while making sure everything actually works properly. I’ve stayed in too many “historic” places where the plumbing was apparently also historic, but not here. The rooms feel authentically Serbian without being kitschy about it, if that makes sense. There’s something about the way they’ve done the interiors that feels like staying at a sophisticated Belgrade aunt’s apartment, assuming your aunt has excellent taste and really good WiFi. The staff genuinely knows the neighborhood – I asked about finding a specific type of Serbian wine and the guy at reception didn’t just point me toward a tourist shop, he actually walked me halfway down the street to introduce me to this tiny place that locals use.

What really won me over though is how perfectly positioned you are for exploring Stari Grad properly. Skadarska itself transforms throughout the day – mornings are quiet and perfect for coffee, evenings get lively with the restaurant crowds, and late nights… well, that’s when the real Belgrade spirit comes out. You’re a five-minute walk from Kalemegdan Fortress, but more importantly, you’re surrounded by the kind of narrow streets where you’ll stumble across hole-in-the-wall restaurants that don’t even have English menus but serve the best ćevapi you’ll ever taste. The hotel folks seem to understand that their guests want the authentic experience – they’ll steer you toward Dva Jelena or Tri Šešira if you want the full traditional treatment, but they’ll also tell you which places are tourist traps to avoid. Parking can be a bit tricky in this part of town (it’s those narrow old streets), but they sort that out for you. With a 9.3 rating, clearly other people are having the same experience I did – this isn’t just a place to sleep, it’s actually a way to live like a Belgrader for a few days, right in the heart of where the city’s artistic soul still beats strongest.
