I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to the Amazonka on Dubrovačka Street, I wasn’t expecting much from the outside. It’s tucked into this quiet residential block in Stari Grad, and you know how these older Belgrade neighborhoods can be… sort of unassuming until you actually get inside somewhere. But man, was I wrong about judging this place too quickly.

The thing about staying here is that you’re actually living like a local for a few days, which sounds cliché but it’s true. You’re about a ten-minute walk from Kalemegdan Park – and I mean a proper walk, not that tourist-brochure nonsense where they pretend everything’s five minutes away. The street itself is pretty calm, mostly residential, so you won’t have drunk groups stumbling past your window at 3 AM like you would closer to Skadarlija. There’s this little bakery around the corner that opens ridiculously early (like 6 AM early), and the smell of fresh bread actually drifts up to the hotel sometimes. The staff seem to know everyone in the neighborhood – they’ll point you toward the good kafanas without you even asking, and they actually mean the places where locals eat, not the tourist traps.

What really got me about the Amazonka was how they’ve managed to feel both polished and unpretentious at the same time. The rooms are genuinely comfortable – good beds, proper water pressure in the shower, that sort of thing – but there’s nothing flashy or trying-too-hard about it. The breakfast area has these big windows that let in tons of morning light, and you can sit there with your coffee and watch the neighborhood wake up. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle (welcome to Belgrade, right?), but the front desk knows all the tricks and side streets where you can actually find a spot. I stayed there in late spring, and honestly, the whole area comes alive once the weather warms up – people sitting outside the little cafés, kids playing in the courtyard spaces between buildings. It felt like being part of something rather than just observing it from a hotel bubble. The 9.5 rating makes sense when you realize it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in the city – it’s just really, really good at what it does.
