Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first pulled up to Vila Geppetto on Svetotrojcina – the name alone had me curious, you know? But this little 4-star gem in Zemun actually turned out to be one of those pleasant surprises that makes you want to keep it as your own secret. The building has this charming, almost fairy-tale quality that somehow doesn’t feel cheesy (I mean, with a name like Geppetto, it could have gone either way).

What really struck me was how they’ve managed to create something that feels both boutique-y and genuinely welcoming. The rooms are thoughtfully done – not trying too hard to be trendy, but clearly someone cared about the details. You’ll notice things like proper reading lights and outlets where you actually need them, which honestly tells you more about a place than fancy marble ever could. The staff genuinely seems to know the neighborhood, too – not just the tourist spots, but where locals go for coffee or which bakery opens earliest. I got better restaurant recommendations here than from most concierges in bigger hotels.

Zemun itself is sort of Belgrade’s best-kept secret if you ask me. You’re technically still in the city, but it feels like this historic riverside town that got absorbed over time – which is basically what happened. The cobblestone streets around Gardoš Tower are maybe a 10-minute walk, and honestly, watching sunset from up there beats any rooftop bar. What I really appreciated was how Vila Geppetto sits just far enough from the main pedestrian zone that you’re not dealing with late-night crowds, but close enough that you can easily wander over for dinner at one of those traditional kafanas. The parking situation is actually manageable too, which anyone who’s tried driving in Belgrade proper will appreciate.

The whole area has this lived-in authenticity – you’ll hear church bells in the morning and smell bread baking from the local shops. It’s the kind of place where you end up having longer conversations with people, maybe because the pace is just slightly slower than downtown Belgrade. With an 8.9 rating, Vila Geppetto clearly gets this balance right – it’s polished enough that you feel taken care of, but unpretentious enough that you can relax into the rhythm of the neighborhood. I keep thinking about going back, actually, which probably says more than any official star rating ever could.
