The building sits right in the heart of Stari Grad, and I’m talking proper old Belgrade here, where you can actually hear the city’s history in the way your footsteps echo off the cobblestones. The apartment I stayed in had these gorgeous high ceilings that you just don’t get in modern places, and the windows – well, they frame the neighborhood like little postcards of authentic Serbian life.

What really got me was how the owners actually seem to understand what travelers need. The kitchen wasn’t just some sad mini-fridge situation; it had proper cookware, which was perfect because there’s this incredible little market just two blocks down where locals shop for the freshest produce. I found myself making morning coffee and watching the street come alive below – old men heading to their chess games in the park, kids racing to school with their backpacks bouncing. The Wi-Fi was solid too (always a relief when you’re trying to upload photos or catch up on work), and the bathroom had one of those rainfall showerheads that actually works, not like the sad drizzle you sometimes get in budget places. I will say the street can get a bit lively on weekend evenings – nothing crazy, just the sounds of people enjoying themselves at the nearby cafés – but honestly, that felt more authentic than sterile silence would have.

Here’s the thing that really sealed it for me: the location puts you within walking distance of basically everything worth seeing in Belgrade, but you’re tucked away enough that you feel like you’re living in a real neighborhood rather than some tourist bubble. Skadarlija, that famous bohemian quarter everyone talks about, is literally a ten-minute stroll away, and Kalemegdan Fortress – where you can watch the most incredible sunsets over the Danube – is close enough that I went there three times during my stay just because I could. The building itself has this quiet dignity about it, sort of weathered but well-maintained, like it’s seen decades of stories and is ready for plenty more. With a 9.6 rating, I get why people keep coming back here. It’s not trying to be fancy or flashy; it’s just genuinely good at being what it is – a comfortable, thoughtfully equipped base for exploring one of Europe’s most underrated cities.
