Old Town Underground

You know what? I walked past Old Town Underground probably a dozen times before I actually noticed it – and that’s sort of the point. Tucked away on Gospodar Jovanova, this 4-star spot doesn’t scream for attention like some of the flashier places in Stari Grad, but honestly, that’s what makes it special. The entrance is understated (I mean, it’s literally called “Underground” for a reason), and when you’re wandering through Belgrade’s old town with all its cobblestones and that beautiful chaos of architecture, this place feels like you’re discovering some kind of insider secret.

The thing about staying here is that you’re genuinely in the heart of everything without dealing with the tourist trap nonsense. Walk five minutes in any direction and you’ll hit Skadarlija – you know, that bohemian quarter everyone talks about – or you can slip down toward the Danube when you need to escape the city buzz. The staff actually knows the neighborhood, too, which sounds basic but you’d be surprised how rare that is. They’ll tell you which kafana serves the best ćevapi (and it’s not the obvious one with lines of tourists), or when the street musicians usually start up in the evening. The rooms themselves have this interesting vibe – they’ve kept some of the original architectural details but updated everything that actually matters, like the wifi and the bathrooms. I appreciated that they didn’t go overboard with the “authentic Serbian experience” theming that some places push too hard.

What really got me was the attention to small stuff. The soundproofing is actually decent, which matters when you’re in the middle of a city that definitely doesn’t sleep early. Check-in was smooth – no drama, no upselling, just “here’s your key, here’s how everything works.” And look, I’m usually skeptical of places with ratings like 9.9 because that seems impossible, but after staying there, I get it. It’s not that everything is perfect in some sterile way, it’s that they’ve figured out what travelers actually need and they just… do it well. The neighborhood gets lively at night but not obnoxiously so, and in the morning you can grab coffee from this little place around the corner that locals actually use. If you’re the type who wants to feel like you’re staying somewhere that belongs in Belgrade rather than just dropped into it, this is your spot.
