You know what really got me about Miss Sunshine? It’s tucked away on this quiet residential street in Stari Grad where you can actually hear birds in the morning instead of traffic – which honestly surprised me for central Belgrade. I mean, you’re literally a five-minute walk from Skadarlija (the cobblestone restaurant district that everyone raves about), but Majke Jevrosime feels almost suburban in the best way possible.

The whole place has this boutique hotel vibe that actually delivers on the promise. When I walked in, there was this subtle lavender scent in the lobby – not overpowering like some places do it – and the woman at reception knew my name before I even got my passport out. The rooms are what I’d call “grown-up modern” if that makes sense. Clean lines, decent-sized bathroom with one of those rainfall showerheads that actually has good pressure, and windows that open wide (thank god, because I hate being trapped with recycled air). The beds are properly firm, and they’ve got blackout curtains that work, which you’ll appreciate if you’re dealing with jet lag.

Here’s the thing though – and this is where Miss Sunshine really wins – they seem to get the little stuff that makes a difference. There’s a proper coffee machine in each room, not one of those pod things that make watery disappointment. The WiFi works everywhere, even in the elevator. And honestly, the breakfast spread is better than some five-star places I’ve stayed at. They do this local cheese and prosciutto selection that changes daily, plus the usual international stuff, but it’s all actually fresh. I found myself lingering over coffee there way longer than usual, partly because the dining area has these big windows overlooking a small garden courtyard – it’s unexpectedly peaceful.

The location thing is sort of perfect for how I like to travel. You’re close enough to walk to the fortress (Kalemegdan Park is maybe ten minutes on foot), and the main pedestrian zone starts just a couple blocks away, but you’re not dealing with drunk tourists stumbling past your window at 2 AM. There’s street parking if you’re brave enough to drive in Belgrade, or the hotel can arrange something more secure for a few extra euros. The Stari Grad area has this lived-in feel – you’ll see locals walking their dogs, elderly ladies chatting on benches, that sort of authentic neighborhood energy that’s getting harder to find in European city centers.

I’ll be straight with you – the 9.9 rating seemed almost too good to be true when I booked, but after staying there, I get it. It’s not flashy or trying to impress you with marble lobbies and doormen in uniforms. Instead, everything just… works. Smoothly. The kind of place where you settle in quickly and start planning your next visit before you’ve even checked out.
