Hanami Design Hotel

You know what struck me first about Hanami Design Hotel? It’s tucked away on Njegoševa Street in this perfectly walkable part of Vračar – honestly, one of Belgrade’s most livable neighborhoods. I mean, you’re literally a five-minute stroll from Slavija Square, but without all that traffic chaos. The building itself has this understated elegance thing going on, nothing flashy, just clean lines and that sort of Japanese-inspired aesthetic the name hints at.

The lobby actually delivers on the design promise – there’s this calm, almost zen-like quality with natural wood and muted colors that somehow doesn’t feel sterile. Check-in was refreshingly smooth (no standing around while they figure out their system), and honestly, the staff seemed to genuinely know the neighborhood. When I asked about getting to Skadarlija for dinner, the front desk guy didn’t just point me toward a map – he told me which streets to take to avoid the construction near the church and mentioned that Dva Jelena gets crazy busy after 8 PM.

What I really appreciated was how they’ve managed to feel boutique-y without being pretentious about it. The rooms are thoughtfully laid out – not huge, but everything has its place, and the beds are actually comfortable (you’d be surprised how many four-star places mess this up). The bathrooms have decent water pressure, which matters when you’ve been walking around Belgrade’s hills all day. I stayed on the third floor facing the street, and while Njegoševa isn’t exactly quiet, it’s more of a gentle urban hum than honking traffic. Actually, I found it kind of soothing – you feel connected to the neighborhood without being overwhelmed by it.

The breakfast situation deserves a mention too. Nothing fancy, but they clearly source locally, and there’s this homemade kajmak that’s better than what you’ll find at most restaurants. Plus, they actually have proper coffee – not that watery hotel stuff that makes you hunt for the nearest kafana by 9 AM. Speaking of which, you’re surrounded by great coffee spots here. There’s this tiny place called Koffein just around the corner that locals line up at every morning.

Location-wise, you’re really well positioned. Kalemegdan Park is maybe a 15-minute walk through some of Belgrade’s prettiest residential streets, and if you’re into the whole bohemian quarter scene, Skadarlija is close enough that you can stumble back after a long dinner without paying surge pricing for a taxi. The neighborhood itself has that lived-in feel – you’ve got your corner grocery stores, a few solid restaurants that aren’t tourist traps, and enough tree-lined side streets to make wandering around actually pleasant.

I’d say this place works best if you want to experience Belgrade like you’re staying in someone’s well-appointed guest room rather than just passing through. It’s got that 9.1 rating for good reason – they’ve figured out how to be reliably comfortable without losing personality. Just don’t expect a rooftop pool or a full-service spa. What you get instead is a genuinely pleasant base for exploring the city, run by people who seem to actually care about your experience.
