It’s tucked away on the seventh floor of this residential building in Novi Beograd, and I almost walked right past it – the entrance is sort of understated, which actually turned out to be part of its charm. I mean, you’re not getting the grand hotel lobby experience here, but once you’re up in apartment 27, it feels like you’ve discovered this hidden gem that most tourists completely miss.

The location is really smart if you know Belgrade at all. Novi Beograd gets a bad rap from people who only stick to the old town, but honestly, you’re right in the heart of where actual Belgraders live and work. There’s this authentic neighborhood vibe – you’ll hear kids playing in the courtyards below, smell someone’s grandmother cooking sarma, and the whole area just feels… real. Plus, getting into the city center is actually pretty easy from here, and parking (which is a nightmare in Stari Grad) isn’t nearly as stressful. The building itself is typical Yugoslav-era architecture – you know, that brutalist concrete style that’s either going to charm you or make you homesick for something more traditional.

What really gets me about this place is the attention to detail that you’d never expect from the exterior. The room felt more like staying in a well-appointed Belgrade apartment than a hotel, which I guess technically it is. Everything was spotless – and I mean everything, down to the corners of the bathroom tiles. The host clearly takes pride in this place, and it shows in ways that matter when you’re actually living there for a few days. The WiFi was solid (crucial for me), the bed was comfortable enough that I didn’t wake up with that hotel-bed backache, and the kitchen setup was functional if you want to grab groceries from the Maxi nearby and cook something simple.

The 9.8 rating honestly makes sense once you’re there – it’s not trying to be the Hyatt, but it’s doing exactly what it promises exceptionally well. The check-in was smooth, communication was clear, and there were these little touches like local recommendations that felt genuine rather than copied from some tourism board pamphlet. I stayed during a quieter period in late spring, so I can’t speak to how it handles the summer festival crowds, but the building seemed well-insulated from street noise.

Look, if you’re the type who needs a concierge and room service, this isn’t your spot. But if you want to experience Belgrade more like a temporary resident than a tourist – waking up to the sounds of a real neighborhood, walking to the corner bakery for burek, maybe striking up conversations with locals who aren’t trying to sell you anything – then Hotel Milan gets it right. It’s that sweet spot between authentic and comfortable that’s surprisingly hard to find in most cities.
