The Experience

Maison Royale

You know what caught me off guard about Maison Royale?

You know what caught me off guard about Maison Royale? Walking up to this place on Kneza Mihaila, I was expecting something a bit more… touristy, I guess. But honestly, it feels like they found this sweet spot between being right in the thick of Belgrade’s main pedestrian zone without screaming “tourist trap.” The building itself has this understated elegance thing going on – not trying too hard to be fancy, but you can tell someone actually cared about the details.

The location is honestly pretty brilliant if you think about it. You’re literally steps from all the street performers and café chaos of Kneza Mihaila (which, let’s be real, can get overwhelming by mid-afternoon), but once you duck inside, there’s this immediate sense of calm. I mean, you’ll still hear some street noise – it’s Belgrade, not a monastery – but it’s more like a gentle urban hum than anything disruptive. What I really appreciated was how easy it made everything else. Kalemegdan Park is basically a five-minute stroll, and if you’re into the whole Skadarlija bohemian quarter scene, you’re not dealing with any complicated taxi situations or trying to figure out the bus system. The staff actually knows the neighborhood too, which sounds obvious but you’d be surprised how many hotel people just point vaguely toward the door when you ask for directions.

The rooms themselves hit that 4-star mark pretty solidly – nothing groundbreaking, but everything works the way it should. Good water pressure (always my first test), decent Wi-Fi, and the beds are actually comfortable, not just dressed up to look nice. I stayed during one of those typical Belgrade summer weeks when it’s properly hot, and the AC kept up without sounding like a helicopter landing on the roof. What struck me most was how they’ve managed to keep things feeling local rather than generic international hotel bland. The breakfast setup is more Continental than hearty Balkan fare, which might disappoint some people, but the coffee is proper strong and they don’t rush you out if you want to linger over it. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle in this part of Stari Grad – the hotel doesn’t have its own lot, but they’ll point you toward the closest options, and honestly, you might find yourself walking everywhere anyway. That 8.5 rating makes sense to me; it’s the kind of place that does what it promises without any unpleasant surprises, and in a city where you’re probably going to be out exploring most of the time anyway, that’s exactly what you want your home base to be.

Comfortable 1st floor room with en-suite. Right in the city centre. Parking in the shopping mall next door. Helpful staff. They helped with our luggage to and from the car park.

What could be improved: No lift. Difficult to find. It is in a pedestrianised area.

This historical mansion was full of old world charm. Exceptional location close to many sights, so we walked everywhere. Also tons of cafes, restaurants & shopping closeby. Hotel was super comfortable & clean. Very helpful staff.

What could be improved: The breakfast at the restaurant downstairs was great value but had limited vegetarian options. There was no elevator in the hotel which was fine by us but to consider when packing your suitcases.

Great location

The place is beautiful and located right in the center of Knez Mihailova – everything was great

What could be improved: However, at night when I turned on the bedside lamp, sparks started coming from behind the bed and the light kept flickering. I turned everything off and removed the key card, but the sparks continued. We called reception, but they didn’t believe us at first. When they saw it themselves, they admitted the issue but said there were no free rooms. Only after we insisted, they finally gave us another room.

The stay was nice overall, but this was a serious safety concern that needs urgent attention.

My son and I had a lovely time in Belgrade. The hotel, receptionists, cleaners and staff at Boutique restaurant were excellent. The service was excellent too. The location couldn't be better .... Near main road, near shopping mall, near restaurants and bars, centre for nightlife and area leads to Republic Square and centre of Belgrade. I highly recommend the hotel.

What could be improved: The hotel has no elevator/lift and we were on the 2nd floor. The 2nd staircase was steep. I have minor mobility issues and the stairs affected me. We overlooked this so this was our fault not to realise. We understand that the hotel is an old mansion but maybe if the hotel has a lift from the back or side ........ People with mobility issues cannot book this hotel unfortunately.

The room had a window next to the roof ... Good for natural light but
otherwise useless ....

Definitely will come back. Everything was clean and well maintained. The one person room was very small, but it was expectable. Also the location is very centrical, you cannot desire more.

What could be improved: I wanted to pay in cash, but I had already charged half of the total amount to my card. I assumed I only needed to pay the remaining half, and usually, they accept it by card or cash. I wanted to pay in cash. In this case, the only options available were to cancel the previous payment and pay the entire amount in cash or pay the second half by card. I chose to pay the total amount in cash. The downside is that I will only receive a refund for half of what was charged to my card in a month.
Additionally, the hotel did not accept euros, so I had to go find an exchange, even though I was very tired.
Not a big problem, but it would be nice if that could be changed.
