You know what caught me off guard about Hotel Balkan? It’s actually tucked away on this quiet little street in Stari Grad, but you’re literally two minutes from all the action on Knez Mihailova. I mean, you get the best of both worlds – you can stumble back from the pedestrian zone after a night out, but you’re not dealing with street noise keeping you up. The building itself has this understated elegance that feels very Belgrade, if that makes sense. Not flashy, just solid and well-maintained in that way that tells you someone actually cares about the place.

The staff here – honestly, they’re the kind of people who remember your name by day two and will give you the real scoop on where to eat. I had this great conversation with the front desk guy about the best kafanas in the neighborhood (spoiler: skip the touristy ones near Republic Square and head toward the Danube). The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid four-star – clean, comfortable beds, good water pressure in the shower. Nothing revolutionary, but everything works properly, which is more than I can say for some places I’ve stayed in the Balkans. The AC actually keeps up with Belgrade’s summer heat, which is no small feat.

What really sold me on this place was the breakfast situation. They’ve got this spread that includes proper Serbian pastries – not just the standard hotel croissants – and the coffee is actually decent. You can sit there in the morning, planning your day, and the whole vibe is just… relaxed. No rushing, no attitude from the staff. Plus, you’re perfectly positioned to explore Stari Grad properly. The Bajrakli Mosque is basically around the corner, and if you’re into that sort of thing, you can walk to Kalemegdan Fortress in about ten minutes. Parking can be a bit tricky in this area – the hotel doesn’t have its own lot, but there’s street parking nearby if you’re patient (or arrive early).

The rating of 9 out of 10 makes complete sense once you’ve been there. It’s not trying to be the fanciest hotel in Belgrade, but it nails the fundamentals while giving you genuine Serbian hospitality. I’ve stayed in places that cost twice as much and left feeling like just another credit card number. Here, you actually feel welcome.
