High Note Apartment

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first walked up to High Note Apartment on Maršala Birjuzova – I mean, the street name alone is a mouthful if you’re not Serbian. But you know what? This place completely caught me off guard in the best way possible. The building sits right in the heart of Stari Grad, and I’m talking proper old Belgrade here, not some touristy interpretation of it. You’ll hear church bells from nearby Orthodox churches mixing with the sounds of locals chatting on their balconies, and there’s this authentic neighborhood energy that most hotels just can’t capture. The apartment itself is what I’d call effortlessly stylish – someone clearly put thought into making it feel like a real home rather than a sterile rental property.

What really sold me on this place was how it actually feels like you’re living in Belgrade, not just visiting it. The owner (or whoever manages it) obviously knows the neighborhood inside and out because everything you need is literally a five-minute walk away. There’s this fantastic little bakery around the corner where locals grab their morning burek – you’ll smell it before you see it, trust me. The apartment gets great natural light, especially in the morning, and the windows open wide which is perfect because Belgrade can get pretty warm in summer. I loved that you could hear the city waking up without it being overwhelming – no major traffic noise, just the gentle hum of people starting their day. The kitchen actually has everything you need if you want to cook (rare in most places, honestly), and the WiFi is solid, which matters if you’re trying to stay connected or upload photos without wanting to throw your phone out the window.

Here’s the thing that impressed me most – it’s got this 9.5 rating, and after staying there, I totally get why. The details matter here. Fresh towels that don’t feel like sandpaper, a shower with actual water pressure, and – this might sound small but it’s huge – proper blackout curtains so you can sleep in after exploring Belgrade’s legendary nightlife scene. Parking can be a bit tricky in this part of Stari Grad (it’s an old neighborhood, so the streets weren’t exactly designed for cars), but that’s true anywhere in the historic center. You’re within walking distance of Skadarlija, which is Belgrade’s bohemian quarter, and Kalemegdan Park is close enough that you could easily stumble there for sunset views over the Danube. I mean, for a 4-star place, it punches well above its weight – it feels more like staying at a friend’s really well-appointed apartment than a typical rental. If you want to experience Belgrade like someone who actually lives there rather than just passing through, this is your spot.
