So I stumbled across Free.three during my third trip to Belgrade – honestly, the name confused me at first, but this place turned out to be one of those hidden gems that locals don’t really talk about because, well, they want to keep it for themselves. It’s tucked away on Pop-Lukina street in Stari Grad, which is perfect if you actually want to experience Belgrade like a person who lives there rather than just another tourist hitting the fortress and calling it a day.

The thing about this hotel is that it gets the balance right – you know what I mean? It’s got that 4-star polish without feeling stuffy or corporate. When I walked in, there was this subtle smell of coffee and something I couldn’t quite place (maybe cedar?), and the lobby had this understated elegance that didn’t scream “look how fancy we are.” The staff actually seemed to enjoy their jobs, which sounds like a small thing but honestly makes such a difference when you’re trying to figure out where to get decent rakija at 2 AM or need directions to that little bakery everyone raves about on Skadarlija. Speaking of which, you’re literally a five-minute walk from Skadarska – not the touristy part that everyone photographs, but the actual neighborhood where people live and eat breakfast at corner cafés that don’t have English menus.

What really won me over was the attention to details that matter. The rooms are soundproofed well enough that you won’t hear every tram rattling by (though honestly, the tram sounds become oddly comforting after a few days), and the beds are actually firm – none of that sinking-into-quicksand nonsense you get at some European hotels. The shower pressure is incredible, which I mention because after walking around Belgrade’s cobblestone streets all day, a proper shower becomes essential. There’s this little coffee setup in each room with actual Serbian coffee, not just generic hotel packets, and the mini-fridge actually gets cold enough to keep your burek fresh for morning (yes, I’m the person who hoards burek). The Wi-Fi works everywhere, even in the elevator, which matters if you’re trying to navigate Belgrade’s… let’s call them “creatively organized” street layouts. Parking isn’t a nightmare either – they’ve got a deal with a garage nearby, which saves you from driving around Stari Grad in circles cursing under your breath like I did my first time here. The 9.5 rating makes sense once you spend a night or two; it’s not flashy luxury, but everything just works the way it should, and the location puts you right in the heart of things without the noise and chaos of being directly on Knez Mihailova.
