Honestly, when I first walked into Designer Apartment Eclectica, I wasn’t sure what to expect from the name – but wow, it actually lives up to it. The place sits right on Kneza Mihaila, which means you’re literally steps from Belgrade’s main pedestrian zone, and I mean that quite literally. You can hear the street musicians from your window, but surprisingly it’s not overwhelming noise – more like a gentle urban soundtrack that somehow works.

The apartment itself is this fascinating mix of vintage Serbian pieces and modern design touches that shouldn’t work together but absolutely do. There’s this gorgeous old wooden cabinet next to a sleek contemporary sofa, and the whole thing feels curated but not stuffy, you know? The owner clearly has an eye for interesting pieces – I spotted what looked like genuine Yugoslav-era ceramics mixed with some seriously stylish lighting fixtures. The kitchen is actually functional too, which is rare for these design-focused places. I made coffee there every morning using their proper espresso maker (not one of those pod things, thankfully), and the whole setup just felt… right.

What really won me over though was the location knowledge you get by staying here. The building is old Belgrade architecture – thick walls, high ceilings, that solid feel you get in Stari Grad – but the owner left this little notebook with genuine local recommendations. Not the usual tourist traps, but places like the pharmacy that stays open late on Makedonska, or which bakery has the best burek in the morning (it’s the one on the corner heading toward Kalemegdan, by the way). You’re maybe a three-minute walk from the fortress, but more importantly, you’re in the actual heart of where Belgrade happens. The Danube is right there when you want that river walk, Skadarlija is close enough for dinner, and you can get to the Bohemian Quarter without dealing with taxis or transit.

I’ll be honest – the shower pressure could be better, and if you’re here during summer, the street can get pretty lively until late. But that’s Belgrade for you, and somehow it adds to the experience rather than detracting from it. The building has that old-world charm where you hear your neighbors occasionally, but it never felt invasive. Check-in was smooth too – the owner met me personally and gave me the full rundown of everything from the quirky light switches to the best route to avoid the crowds on Kneza Mihaila during weekend evenings.

This isn’t your generic hotel experience, and that’s exactly why it works. It feels like staying in a friend’s well-designed apartment, if your friend happened to have impeccable taste and insider knowledge of Belgrade. The 9-star rating makes perfect sense once you’re there – it’s not trying to be a luxury hotel, but it nails exactly what it is trying to be.
