Capital Hotel Garni

Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of hotels in Belgrade over the years, and Capital Hotel Garni honestly surprised me. When you first walk up to Cara Lazara 3, you’re right in the heart of Stari Grad – and I mean the actual old town, not some tourist trap version of it. The building has this understated elegance that feels authentically Serbian rather than trying too hard to impress international visitors.

What really got me was how quiet it stays despite being so central. You’re literally a three-minute walk from Skadarlija (you know, that cobblestone street everyone raves about), but somehow the hotel manages to feel like a peaceful retreat. The rooms have this solid, well-maintained feel – not flashy, but everything actually works properly, which honestly can’t be said for every place in Belgrade. The staff seems to genuinely know the neighborhood too, which makes a difference when you’re trying to figure out where to grab dinner that isn’t completely overpriced. They pointed me toward this little kafana on Kralja Petra that I never would’ve found otherwise.

Here’s the thing about staying in Stari Grad – you’re going to hear church bells, especially from the Orthodox cathedral nearby, but it’s more charming than annoying. The hotel’s 4-star rating feels accurate without being inflated, and that 8.7 rating makes sense when you consider you’re getting solid comfort in a location that would cost twice as much in most European capitals. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle in this area (welcome to Belgrade’s old town), but the hotel staff actually knows the neighborhood well enough to give you real advice about where to leave your car overnight. I mean, you could easily walk to Republic Square, the fortress, or catch a taxi to Zemun from here without any hassle. It’s one of those places where you feel like you’re staying somewhere locals would actually recommend to their relatives visiting from out of town, rather than just another hotel that exists purely for tourists passing through.
