Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Apart Hotel Maksimum on Paunova Street, I wasn’t expecting much. The Voždovac area isn’t exactly where most tourists end up, but you know what? That turned out to be the best part. This place feels like you’re staying in an actual Belgrade neighborhood instead of some sterile hotel district. The building itself has that solid, no-nonsense Serbian architecture – nothing flashy, but you can tell it’s built to last. What really got me was how quiet it is once you’re inside, even though you’re still close enough to hear the occasional tram rumbling by on the main roads.

The apartments themselves are honestly better than I expected for the price point. I mean, we’re talking proper kitchenettes with real appliances (not those sad little coffee makers some places try to pass off), and the beds are actually comfortable – I’m talking about the kind of sleep where you wake up confused about what time zone you’re in. The bathrooms are modern without being over-designed, and there’s decent water pressure, which… if you’ve stayed in older Belgrade buildings, you know that’s not always a given. What I really appreciated was the little details – like having enough outlets near the bed for all your devices, and windows that actually open properly when you want some fresh air. The WiFi worked everywhere, which is more than I can say for some fancier places I’ve stayed.

Here’s the thing about the location that took me a day or two to figure out – you’re actually in a perfect spot if you want to experience Belgrade like locals do. There’s a solid bakery about two blocks down where you can grab burek for breakfast (the cheese one is incredible), and you’re walking distance from some neighborhood kafanas that don’t see many tourists but serve better food than half the places in Skadarlija. The tram connections are pretty decent once you get the hang of the system, though honestly, I ended up walking more than I planned because the riverside areas are closer than they look on the map. Parking was surprisingly easy – there’s street parking that doesn’t cost a fortune, and the front desk folks actually know which spots tend to be available when. The staff, by the way, speaks solid English and genuinely seems to care about whether you’re having a good time, not just going through the motions. It’s the kind of place where you feel like you’re staying somewhere real instead of just passing through.
