Palace Hotel
You know what struck me first about the Palace Hotel?
You know what struck me first about the Palace Hotel? It’s actually got some serious old-world charm going on, which honestly surprised me given Belgrade’s mix of communist-era blocks and shiny new developments. The building sits right on Topličin venac – and if you’re not familiar with this street, it’s basically in the heart of Stari Grad where you can walk to pretty much everything that matters. I mean, you’re maybe five minutes from Knez Mihailova pedestrian zone, and the fortress is right there too.
The lobby has this sort of faded elegance thing happening – marble floors that have seen better days but still manage to look dignified, and the staff actually seems to know what they’re doing (which isn’t always a given in Belgrade hotels, let me tell you). My room was on the third floor, and while it wasn’t exactly spacious, it had these tall ceilings that made it feel less cramped than it probably was. The bathroom was recently renovated – you can tell because the tiles actually match and the shower pressure is decent. One thing though: if you’re a light sleeper, ask for a room facing the courtyard instead of the street. Topličin venac gets surprisingly busy, especially on weekend nights when people are heading to the kafanas in Skadarlija.
What I really appreciated was how the hotel doesn’t try to be something it’s not. It’s a solid four-star place that knows its strengths – the location is absolutely unbeatable, the breakfast is actually pretty good (they do this cheese börek that’s worth getting up for), and the front desk folks can point you toward the real Belgrade, not just the tourist stuff. The concierge told me about this little wine bar tucked away near the cathedral that I never would’ve found otherwise. Sure, the WiFi can be spotty on the upper floors, and the elevator makes these concerning noises, but honestly? For the price and the location, those are pretty minor complaints. If you want to be in the thick of things in Belgrade’s old town without paying premium prices, this place actually delivers on what it promises. Just don’t expect Instagram-perfect rooms – think more “comfortable European hotel your well-traveled aunt would recommend.”

Location
What could be improved: Washrooms
Very beautiful, old fashioned hotel. The staff were lovely and very helpful. Great restaurant with an excellent choice of breakfast items. Located in the old part of town with plenty of restaurants and bars. Convenient for museums and the Belgrade Waterfront. The staff are a credit to the hotel deserve recognition for their hard work. The Palace is over 100 years old and is in an interesting historical location.
What could be improved: Could do with a little bit of TLC. Could not get the hairdryer to work and the shower did not produce very warm water. But the receptionist on duty could not have been more helpful when I rang to tell them about noise which appeared to be coming from the plumbing and found me another room which was quieter.
