Metropol Palace, Belgrade

You know what caught me off guard about the Metropol Palace? It’s this grand old dame sitting right on Bulevar kralja Aleksandra that somehow manages to feel both imposing and welcoming at the same time. I mean, when you’re walking up from the direction of Vukov Spomenik metro station, you can’t miss it – the building has this serious presence that makes you wonder if you’re dressed well enough for the lobby (you probably are, but still).

The thing is, once you’re inside, it actually feels more relaxed than you’d expect from a five-star place. The staff genuinely seems to know what they’re doing without being stuffy about it, and honestly, that’s refreshing in Belgrade where service can be… well, let’s say inconsistent. What really works here is the location – you’re in Palilula, which sounds fancy but is really just this perfectly positioned neighborhood where you can walk to the city center in about fifteen minutes, or hop on public transport that actually runs on time. The nearby streets have these little kafanas and shops that tourists usually miss, plus you’re close enough to Kalemegdan that you can stumble back after a long night exploring the fortress area without bankrupting yourself on taxi rides.

I’ll be straight with you though – the rooms vary quite a bit depending on which side of the building you end up on. The ones facing the boulevard can get a bit noisy during rush hour (Belgrade traffic is no joke), but the interior courtyard rooms are surprisingly quiet. The beds are proper comfortable, and there’s something about the way they’ve renovated the place that keeps the old-world character without making you feel like you’re staying in a museum. The breakfast spread is actually worth getting up for, which I can’t say about most hotel breakfasts – they do this Serbian cheese selection that’s honestly better than what you’ll find at most restaurants in the city center. Plus, the coffee is strong enough to wake the dead, which you’ll appreciate if you’ve been sampling Belgrade’s nightlife scene. What really sold me on this place was how the concierge knew exactly which tram to take to get to Ada Ciganlija without me having to explain where I wanted to go – that kind of local knowledge makes all the difference when you’re trying to make the most of your time in the city.
