Belgrade Waterfront Apartments

You know what caught me off guard about Belgrade Waterfront Apartments? It’s actually right in the middle of this massive urban development project that’s completely transformed the riverfront – I mean, when you walk out the door on Bulevar Vudroa Vilsona, you’re basically standing in what feels like a completely different city from old Belgrade. The whole area has this gleaming, almost Dubai-esque vibe with the glass towers and manicured walkways along the Sava River, which honestly took some getting used to since I was expecting more of that gritty Balkan charm.

The apartments themselves are pretty impressive though – everything feels brand new and well-thought-out, with floor-to-ceiling windows that give you these sweeping views of either the river or the city depending on which way you’re facing. I stayed in a one-bedroom unit on the 12th floor and could see all the way across to New Belgrade, plus you get this fascinating contrast between the historic fortress on one side and all the construction cranes on the other. The kitchen actually has everything you need if you want to cook (which I did a few times using stuff from the nearby Maxi market), and the beds are proper comfortable – none of that European extra-firm nonsense that leaves you feeling like you slept on concrete.

What really works about this place is how walkable everything is, but in a different way than the old town. You can stroll down to Galerija Belgrade shopping center in about five minutes, or walk along the riverfront promenade when you need some air – there’s always something happening down there, especially on weekends when families come out with their kids. The Sava Promenada runs right along the water and connects you to the rest of the city, though honestly, you might find yourself just staying in this little bubble because it has everything you need. Parking was surprisingly easy too, which anyone who’s driven in Belgrade will tell you is basically a miracle. The only thing that bugged me slightly was how quiet it gets at night – I mean, that’s probably a good thing for most people, but if you’re used to the energy of Skadarlija or Strahinjića Bana, this area can feel a bit sterile after dark. But then again, you’re literally a quick taxi ride away from anywhere you want to be, and the views of the city lights reflecting off the Sava at night are pretty spectacular from up there.
