You know what? I was honestly skeptical when I first pulled up to Apartment Gajic on Zmajevačka Street – I mean, Čukarica isn’t exactly the Belgrade neighborhood that screams “tourist hotspot.” But sometimes being wrong feels pretty great, and this was definitely one of those times.

The thing about Julino Brdo is that it’s where actual Belgraders live, not just where they take visitors. You’re about fifteen minutes from the chaos of Knez Mihailova, but you can actually sleep at night without drunk groups singing under your window at 3 AM. The Gajić family (yeah, it’s a family-run place) has this whole setup figured out – they’ve got these apartments that feel more like staying at your Belgrade cousin’s place than some sterile hotel room. The building itself is pretty typical for the area, nothing fancy from the outside, but step inside and you realize they’ve put real thought into making travelers comfortable. There’s always parking, which honestly might be worth the stay alone if you’ve ever tried finding a spot in Stari Grad on a Friday night.

What really got me was how they handle the little stuff that chain hotels always mess up. The Wi-Fi actually works throughout the apartment (I was doing video calls from the kitchen, no problem), and they stock the place with basics like decent coffee and those thick towels that don’t feel like sandpaper. The location grows on you too – there’s this great bakery about two blocks down that locals line up at every morning, and you’re close enough to Ada Ciganlija that you can bike there without breaking a sweat. I mean, sure, you’re not stumbling distance from the fortress or the bohemian quarter, but the tram connections are solid, and honestly? After a day of tourist stuff, coming back to a quiet residential street where kids are playing football in the courtyard felt pretty perfect. The 8.8 rating makes sense when you realize they’re not trying to be something they’re not – just a really well-run place where you can spread out, do some laundry, and feel like you’re getting a slice of real Belgrade life instead of the Instagram version.
